Slovakia and Ukraine: How War Has Changed The Neighbourhood (Conference)

May 9, 2026
Uzh

Speaking at a conference in Uzhhorod on May 9, Balázs Jarábik reflected on how Russia’s war against Ukraine has transformed Slovak-Ukrainian relations and, more broadly, the meaning of good-neighbourly relations in Central Europe.

Drawing on Slovakia’s political evolution and the changing regional environment, Jarábik highlighted the growing gap between strategic interests - which continue to bind Slovakia and Ukraine together - and increasingly difficult domestic politics and public perceptions. His contribution emphasized that rebuilding a durable relationship will require moving beyond wartime political narratives toward a more pragmatic dialogue rooted in mutual interests, cross-border cooperation, and a realistic understanding of each other’s domestic constraints.
