In a wide-ranging interview with the Slovak conservative portal Postoj, Balázs Jarábik argues that Europe’s central problem is not its commitment to Ukraine, but the absence of a strategy for how the war should end, and what relations with Russia should look like afterwards. Europe, he argues, is effectively continuing Biden-era policy without Biden: seeking to weaken Russia through support for Ukraine while leaving the political endgame undefined.
The interview also examines the new Hungarian-Ukrainian minority agreement, the unrealistic expectations surrounding Ukraine’s rapid EU accession, and the changing military balance. Jarábik distinguishes between three parallel wars: the narrative war, where Ukraine retains the advantage; the war of attrition, where Russia has the upper hand; and the war of adaptation, where Ukraine continues to perform remarkably well. The immediate challenge is winter, and whether Ukraine’s deep strikes can create enough pressure for a freeze in the fighting before then.
